Religious Education Program Perspective:
“The programme already exists: it is the plan found in the Gospel and in the living Tradition, it is the same as ever. Ultimately, it has its center in Christ himself, who is to be known, loved and imitated, so that in him we may live the life of the Trinity.” (NMI 29)
The confusion, indifference, and spiritual blindness generated by the many ideas and environments contrary to the faith that children are bombarded with every day makes more diffused their true identity and dignity as children of God. Jesus is the one who “fully reveals man to man himself.” Therefore, as a response to this reality, we want to present Christian life not as another concept to learn or content to memorize, but as it truly is, as a lifestyle fruit of the personal encounter with a person: Jesus Christ.
Imitating the Most Blessed Virgin Mary, we (children, parents, and catechists) will learn to receive, live and give Jesus Christ.
The roles of families in their children’s religious education:
“The Christian home is the place where children receive the first proclamation of the faith. For this reason, the family home is rightly called “the domestic church,” a community of grace and prayer, a school of human virtues and of Christian charity.” (CCC 1666)
Formation Stages
There are three main stages of formation in the Religious Education program at St. Mary’s.
First Eucharist: The preparation for First Eucharist is of 3 years. Children can begin this process when they are on 1st grade. During the first two years children and youth will know the basics of our Catholic faith with special emphasis on the Kerygma as the first announcement of the Good News, a deeper understanding of their dignity and identity as sons and daughters of God, and a stronger personal relationship with Jesus. Year three will focus on the mystery of the Eucharist and the sacrament of Reconciliation.
Intermediate years: After children have received First Eucharist, they can come for continuing formation for up to three years before they begin preparing for the sacrament of Confirmation. During these years they will continue to grow and deepen their relationship with God and learn about the teachings of our Church. Different experiential opportunities will be offered during this time making learning dynamic, alive, and attractive for our children and youth.
Confirmation: these two years of our Religious Education program focus on the sacrament of Confirmation; teenagers can begin at 7th grade or later. During these two years they will receive the necessary tools to understand the sacrament they are preparing to receive and will strengthen their relationship with Jesus. As a result of this experience of closeness to their Savior and Lord, they will be more ready to persevere in the practice of their faith. In the second year, they will be introduced to the experience of apostolate by doing 10 hours of service to help those who are most in need. In order to receive Confirmation teens will be required to attend two spiritual retreats during the second year of preparation.
***Attendance to Mass on Sunday and Holy Days of obligation is an essential part of the formation process at all its stages.
Programa de Educación Religiosa
“No se trata, pues, de inventar un nuevo programa. El programa ya existe. Es el de siempre, recogido por el Evangelio y la Tradición viva. Se centra, en definitiva, en Cristo mismo, al que hay que conocer, amar e imitar, para vivir en él la vida trinitaria.” (NMI 29)
La confusión, indiferencia, y ceguera espiritual generadas por las muchas ideas y ambientes contrarios a la fe con la que nuestros hijos son bombardeados cada día hace más difícil para ellos reconocer su identidad y dignidad como hijos de Dios. Jesucristo es quien “manifiesta plenamente el hombre al propio hombre.” Por esto, como respuesta a esta realidad que vivimos, queremos presentar la vida cristiana no como otro concepto para aprender o concepto para memorizar, sino como lo que verdaderamente es, como un estilo de vida fruto de un encuentro personal con una persona: Jesucristo.
Imitando a la Santísima Virgen María, nosotros (niños y jóvenes, padres de familia, y catequistas) aprenderemos a recibir, a vivir y a dar a Jesucristo.
El papel de la Familia en la Educación Religiosa de sus Hijos:
“El hogar cristiano es el lugar en que los hijos de Dios reciben el primer anuncio de la fe. Por eso la casa familiar es llamada justamente ‘Iglesia doméstica’, comunidad de gracia y de oración, escuela de virtudes humanas y de caridad cristiana” (CIC 1666).
Etapas de Formación en el Programa:
Primera Comunión: La preparación para la Primera Comunión es de tres años. Los niños pueden iniciar este proceso desde que están en primer grado. Durante los dos primeros años los niños y jóvenes conocerán lo básico de nuestra fe católica con énfasis especialmente en el Kerigma como primer anuncio de la Buena Nueva, una compresión más profunda de su dignidad e identidad como hijos(as) de Dios, y la construcción de una sólida relación personal con Jesucristo. El tercer año se centrará en el misterio de la Eucaristía y el sacramento de la Reconciliación.
Años intermedios: Después de recibir la Primera Comunión los niños pueden asistir a la formación continuada hasta por tres años antes de iniciar la preparación para el sacramento de Confirmación. Durante estos años ellos continuarán creciendo y profundizando en su relación con Dios y aprenderán las enseñanzas básicas de nuestra Iglesia. Durante este tiempo se ofrecerán diferentes oportunidades experienciales haciendo el aprendizaje más dinámico, vivo y atractivo para nuestros niños y jóvenes.
Confirmación: en estos dos años de nuestro programa de Educación Religiosa se enfocan en el sacramento de la Confirmación; los adolescentes pueden iniciar cuando están en 7mo grado o más tarde. Durante estos dos años ellos recibirán las herramientas necesarias para entender mejor el sacramento para el cual se están preparando y fortalecerán su relación con Jesús. Como resultado de esta experiencia de cercanía con su Señor y Salvador, los adolescentes estarán mejor preparados para perseverar in la práctica de su fe. En el segundo año, serán introducidos a la experiencia de apostolado por medio de 10 horas de servicio para ayudar a los más necesitados. Para poder recibir la confirmación deberán participar en dos retiros espirituales durante el segundo año de preparación.
***La participación en la Eucaristía los domingos y fiestas de guardar es parte esencial de este proceso de formación para todas las etapas de la educación religiosa.
